Manitoba Masonry Institute (MMI) elects new President, Mark Laarveld, Eurocan Enterprises for the 2016-2018 term. Jeffrey Dolovich, Gillis Quarries Limited & Forte Construction Systems becomes Immediate Past President.

NATIONAL PRESIDENT HARRY LAARVELD – ONE MORE STEP TOWARDS RETIREMENT
Winnipegger, Harry Laarveld’s term as national President of the CMCA comes to a close. Harry remains on the board as immediate Past President and takes one step closer to a very well deserved retirement. Harry is former owner of Eurocan Enterprises, one of the largest masonry contractors in Manitoba. Harry remains a very active member of both the provincial and national associations.
Taking over the reins is Bill George of GA Masonry who becomes President of the CMCA 50 years after his iconic father, Gene George, began the association in 1967. GA Masonry, arguably the largest masonry contractor in Canada, was the company that installed 150,000 sq. ft. of Tyndall Stone on the Canadian Museum for Human Rights.

RED RIVER COLLEGE RECEIVES NSERC GRANT 2016
Red River College is awarded an NSERC grant for its new Building Envelope Technology Access Centre. (BETAC) The new research facility will generate critical independent data to support state of the art design and construction. The masonry industry was one of 16 key stakeholders involved in the process and interviews by NSERC.
MMI BETAC PARTNERSHIP – PILOT PROJECT
The MMI partners with RRC’s BETAC to develop its first pilot project. Three 8’ x 8’ huts are to be constructed in the summer of 2017 to compare the thermal performance of various cavity wall systems. State of the art technology, including infrared cameras, will assist in gathering the most comprehensive of data. Technology and Trades students will assist in its construction and monitoring to ensure a heavy emphasis on the educational component.
PARTNERS PROGRAM, FACULTY OF ARCHITECTURE, UNIVERSITY OF MANITOBA
The MMI joins the Faculty of Architecture’s PARTNERS PROGRAM, shoring up its renewed partnership with the department. The Partners Program “promotes communication between professionals, industry, educators and students to ensure that the students within the faculty receive an excellent professional education rich in theoretical & technical skills.”
The Faculty of Architecture’s Partners Program sponsors the revitalization of The Centre for Architectural Structures and Technology (C.A.S.T. Building); a detached research facility located on site at the Faculty of Architecture.
The C.A.S.T. Building is “an architectural research laboratory that embraces both the poetic and technical dimensions of architectural design. The work of C.A.S.T. seeks new boundaries for creative thought, design and building technology. This is done through physical explorations of materials, tools and building methods, the study of natural law, and the free play of imagination.”
The C.A.S.T. building laboratory is unique to the University of Manitoba’s Faculty of Architecture, specifically designed to support a new vision of architectural education and research.
HANDS ON MASONRY ELECTIVE, FACULTY OF ARCHITECTURE GRAD PROGRAM March 2017
The MMI once again is sponsoring the Faculty of Architecture elective, “Hands on Masonry.” Approx. 15 Grad students are treated to a tour of Gillis Quarries’ operation and the masonry shop at Red River College. Instructor extraordinaire, Brian Gebhardt takes the students through the magical history of masonry in Manitoba. It is then followed buy an organic discussion on building science with Brian, Jeffrey Dolovich, VP, Sales and Marketing, Gillis Quarries Limited and John Wells, President of Crosier Kilgour Partners, all while the students construct true arches out of brick. The grad students often comment that this is the best course they have ever taken.

The MMI proudly announces the very successful launch of its new Guest Lecture Series. Located at the iconic Winnipeg Art Gallery, each lecture highlights ground breaking initiatives by contemporary professionals. In December of 2016, internationally acclaimed Structural Enginer John Ochsendorf of M.I.T. treated an audience of industry professionals, designers and students of the University of Manitoba’s Faculty of Architecture to a wonderfully exciting lecture on vaults. In March of 2017, the industry enjoyed a stellar presentation by New York based architect Billie Tsien whose firm, in addition to numerous national and international honours, was recently selected to design the Obama Presidential Centre in Chicago.
The Guest Lecture Series is very quickly becoming one of the highlights of the year. Given the exceptional feedback, the industry will be looking forward to two more presentations in the fall of 2017 and spring of 2018. Please stay tuned.

WINNIPEG HOSTS SKILLS CANADA 2017
May 31 to June 3, RBC Convention Centre
“The Skills Canada National Competition (SCNC) is the only national, multi-trade and technology competition for students and apprentices in the country. Every year, more than 500 young people from all regions of Canada come to SCNC to participate in over 40 skilled trade and technology competitions.
By providing a forum where Canadian youth can compete at the national level, SCNC provides hands-on work experience related to skilled trade and technology careers.
Through these competitions, Skills/Compétences Canada also seeks to raise awareness about skilled trade and technology sectors to Canadian youth and their influencers. Students must compete at local, regional and provincial/territorial events in order to represent their province/territory at SCNC.
SCNC 2017 will take place at the RBC Convention Centre in Winnipeg, MB!

Dr. Mike Hatzinikolas, P.Eng., former executive director of the Canadian Masonry Research Institute releases his new masonry textbook, Masonry Design for Engineers and Architects – Fourth Edition, which takes into the account the most current codes and standards. This publication, along with the previously released textbook Masonry Structures by Robert Drysdale, provides practitioners and students with the vital technical information required for Structural Masonry Design.
