MMI BETAC PARTNERSHIP – PILOT PROJECT
The MMI partners with RRC’s BETAC to develop its first pilot project. Three 8’ x 8’ huts are to be constructed in the summer of 2017 to compare the thermal performance of various cavity wall systems. State of the art technology, including infrared cameras, will assist in gathering the most comprehensive of data. Technology and Trades students will assist in its construction and monitoring to ensure a heavy emphasis on the educational component.
PARTNERS PROGRAM, FACULTY OF ARCHITECTURE, UNIVERSITY OF MANITOBA
The MMI joins the Faculty of Architecture’s PARTNERS PROGRAM, shoring up its renewed partnership with the department. The Partners Program “promotes communication between professionals, industry, educators and students to ensure that the students within the faculty receive an excellent professional education rich in theoretical & technical skills.”
The Faculty of Architecture’s Partners Program sponsors the revitalization of The Centre for Architectural Structures and Technology (C.A.S.T. Building); a detached research facility located on site at the Faculty of Architecture.
The C.A.S.T. Building is “an architectural research laboratory that embraces both the poetic and technical dimensions of architectural design. The work of C.A.S.T. seeks new boundaries for creative thought, design and building technology. This is done through physical explorations of materials, tools and building methods, the study of natural law, and the free play of imagination.”
The C.A.S.T. building laboratory is unique to the University of Manitoba’s Faculty of Architecture, specifically designed to support a new vision of architectural education and research.

NEW MMI SPONSORED GUEST LECTURE SERIES
The MMI proudly announces the very successful launch of its new Guest Lecture Series. Located at the iconic Winnipeg Art Gallery, each lecture highlights ground breaking initiatives by contemporary professionals. In December of 2016, internationally acclaimed Structural Enginer John Ochsendorf of M.I.T. treated an audience of industry professionals, designers and students of the University of Manitoba’s Faculty of Architecture to a wonderfully exciting lecture on vaults. In March of 2017, the industry enjoyed a stellar presentation by New York based architect Billie Tsien whose firm, in addition to numerous national and international honours, was recently selected to design the Obama Presidential Centre in Chicago.
The Guest Lecture Series is very quickly becoming one of the highlights of the year. Given the exceptional feedback, the industry will be looking forward to two more presentations in the fall of 2017 and spring of 2018. Please stay tuned.
